Hot Cross Buns and Its Traditions

Hot Cross Buns have been a treasured seasonal treat for centuries. Although the roots of the tradition are not completely clear, they are thought to date back to medieval England, when bakeries marked hot spiced buns with a cross to signify their inclusion in Easter holidays. Today, most hot cross buns obtained commercially come with pieces of candied orange or other citrus peel as well as currants or raisins included.

There is also often a special topping of sugar and spice mixture – including cloves and nutmeg – which can vary between regions; for example, Australian Hot Cross Buns might also have pieces of apple or pineapple fused into them. In the United Kingdom, Scotland, and Ireland, these spiced buns are often served during Easter time as symbols of love, charity, and good luck. The cross on the top is said to represent the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, paying respect to their religious tradition.

Overall, these small delicious treats have remained much the same over hundreds of years and remain an integral part of Easter celebrations around the world.

Amen to that!

Amen to that!

Ingredients

Let's gather the ingredients!

    Dough

    • 1⅓ cups almond milk or other plant-based milk
    • 4 tbsp coconut oil
    • 2 tsp vanilla extract
    • 4 cups all-purpose flour plus more for dusting
    • tsp active dry yeast
    • cup granulated sugar
    • ½ tsp kosher salt
    • 2 tsp cinnamon ground
    • ½ cup raisins

    Cross filling

    • ½ cup all-purpose flour
    • 5 tbsp water
    • 3 tbsp maple syrup

    Instructions

    Let's Begin!

      Dough

      • In a saucepan, heat up the almond milk, then add in coconut oil and vanilla. Remove from heat and let the coconut oil dissolve and the milk come to room temperature.
      • In a mixing bowl combine flour, dry yeast, sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Make a hole in the middle and pour in the milk mixture.
      • Mix to combine, then drop the dough on a counter, lightly dusted with flour, and knead thoroughly for about 7 minutes, until the dough is shiny and elastic.
      • Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover and let rise in a warm spot for about an hour hours, or until the dough has risen and doubled in size.
      • Once the dough has risen, remove it from the bowl and turn it back on your counter. Flatten it out with a rolling pin to a large rectangle.
      • Sprinkle the raisins over the dough generously, then shape the dough into a ball again and let rise covered for another hour.
      • Line a large baking tray with parchment paper. Turn the dough on your counter and cut it into 12 even-sized pieces.
      • Roll each dough piece into a ball and place them on the baking tray, leaving a space of about an inch between them. Cover the buns with a towel and let rise for about 30 minutes.
      • While waiting, preheat the oven to 400°F.

      Add the Cross

      • In a small bowl, mix flour with about 5 tablespoons of water. Your dough should be paste-like, but not too liquid.
      • Fill a piping bag with the flour paste and pipe crosses across the buns.
      • Bake the buns for about 15-20 minutes, until the buns are a golden brown color.
      • Once baked, remove from the oven and set on a cooling rack. While still hot, spread the buns with some maple syrup for shine.
      • Serve with vegan butter, and enjoy with family and friends!
