Puff Pastry Apple Turnover
These easy-to-make puff pastry apple turnovers are popular pastries that can be found in many bakeries and convenience stores. They are made by taking an apple, slicing it into thin pieces, and then wrapping it up in a doughy pastry wrapper. Perfect for the fall season and for any occasion.

For the puff pastry:
- 2 medium apples cored, diced, and peeled
- 1 tbsp butter unsalted or vegan butter
- 1/3 cup sugar or use organic sugar
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon ground
- ¼ tsp nutmeg ground
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp all-purpose flour or use gluten-free flour
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 1 pack puff pastry thawed according to package directions, or homemade
- 1 large egg plus 1 tbsp of water, if want to omit eggs alternatively use vegetable oil
For the glaze:
- 1/2 cup sugar powdered
- 1-2 tbsp milk or use plant-based milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Prepare apple turnovers:
Preheat the oven to 400F and line a baking sheet.
In a saucepan, melt the butter, then add the diced apples for at least 4-5 minutes, or until softened.
Caramelized the apples by adding brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, all-purpose flour, and salt. cooked for at least 3-4 minutes. Set them aside.
Using a cutter, cut the puff pastry into 4 equal-sized squares, then add the caramelized apple to the center.
Brush the surface of the puff pastry using egg wash and fold just like the picture, then crimp the pastry and seal it with a fork. Make a slit on top of the turnovers. Refrigerate!
In a preheated oven, place the turnovers and bake for at least 20–25 minutes or until golden brown.
Meanwhile, make the glaze. Mix the milk, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract together. Mix them well until incorporated.
Over the cooked turnovers, drizzled with the prepared glaze.
Recipe note
- Do not fill the puff pastry too much with caramelized apples.
- Before placing the apple turnovers into puff pastry, allow them to refrigerate for at least 18–20 minutes so that the filling doesn't leak during filling.
- To make this gluten-free recipe, choose a certified gluten-free flour and puff pastry.
