Ingredients tips and substitution
This recipe does not require complicated ingredients. Yes, that’s true. I’m sure these ingredients are already in your kitchen. And if you don’t have it, you can buy it at your favorite grocery store. So add these ingredients to your shopping list, buy a lot of them, and we will make a lot of Thanksgiving desserts.
You’ll need the following to make the crust: all-purpose flour, unsalted butter, sugar, kosher salt, apple cider vinegar, and ice water.
Then you will need for the filling: sweet potato puree, condensed milk, eggs, vanilla extract, ground nutmeg, ground ginger, cinnamon, salt, and for the toppings it’s either heavy cream or mini marshmallow.
That’s all you need to make this sweet potato pie! In addition, this dessert can be made vegan, we simply substitute the dairy-product ingredients with non-dairy products.
Vegan Substitutions–optional
Yes, this is optional! If you are a vegan and baking is your hobby, I got you, we will substitute some of the ingredients; see below!
- Condensed milk and heavy cream: Alternatively use full-fat coconut milk, it is vegan.
- Eggs: I suggest using flax seeds, but you can also use: aquafaba, mashed banana, apple sauce, or pumpkin.
- For the toppings: If using marshmallows I highly recommend Dandies brand, and or whipped cream.

- Refrigerate the flour and butter first for 25–30 minutes before making the crust.
- In a food processor, pulse to combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Then add the butter, apple cider, and ice water until the dough forms.
- On a floured surface, form the dough into a ball and flatten it into a disc. Be sure that there are no signs of cracks.
- Refrigerate the dough with plastic wrap and cover for at least 3 hours, or even overnight, if desired.
- Preheat the oven to 425F and grease the pie dish.
- Roll out the dough on a floured area, then transfer it to a pie dish and flatten it like a disc to form a pie crust (see the picture). Place it for 10–15 minutes in the freezer.
- Once chilled, bake the crust for at least 10–15 minutes, or until the crust is completely baked.
- Meanwhile, in a mixing bowl, stir to combine the sweet potato puree, condensed milk, eggs, vanilla extract, spices, and salt until smooth.
- Over a baked crust, gently pour the sweet potato mixture and bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes, or until the pie becomes golden.
- Served topped with whipped cream or marshmallow, if preferred.
